Two generations of Baltimore outsider sound artists come together on
“John of Dust”, a strikingly organic and intuitive new album made by
M.C. Schmidt of oddball sampling pioneers Matmos and Obie Feldi, a
member of bruising post-everything duo Two Weeks
(ages 59 and 21, respectively). Across two sidelong suites, “John of
Dust” alchemically distils field recordings, synthesis, neo-ASMR
whispering, mysterious liquid noise and close mic-ed percussive sounds
into alternately jarring and soothing passages of electroacoustic
collage. “John of Dust” sometimes hints at an esoteric conceptual
gambit – as when a list of famous people named John is intoned
briefly—but it eschews unity in favor of a restless movement across a
meandering landscape. Voices both real and synthesized occasionally
bob to the surface, but the emphasis throughout is on textural
encounter as subtly psychedelic drips and amoeboid forms flow from
section to section, casting a weirdly entrancing spell. Fans of Zoviet
France, sound poetry, and the more outré corners of computer music
will find themselves playing this one frequently. On a limited edition
cassette from E2-E4, the label that also released M.C. Schmidt’s last
solo album “From fountains to sewers.”
Approx. 38 minute cassette of tiny sounds amplified, bigger sounds made quiet.

Really really REALLY pissed off at Rob Miller; Amebix were a seminal band for me and he goes and comes out with shit like this? I know time passes, and people change, but seriously; WTF? moggydon
Experimental hip-hop beats and meditative arrangements abound on this original soundtrack, the producer's first release in nearly a decade. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 3, 2019
